ii. how "lighten" photo so text on top will be clearly readable?
iii. how write on top of picture, like this cool guy does in the top two slides http://technology.chtsai.org/impress/widescreen-tv.jpg

Re: How write on background photo?
Welcome to the forum.
See [Tutorial] Some useful hints on using images for a discussion on how best to handle images in Writer. It works for Impress too.
1. Writing on top of an image. Right-click the Image > Arrange > Send to back. You can now write on top of it.
2. Lighten the image. Use an Image editor like IrfanView and go Image > Colour corrections. Or reduce the transparency value - this can also be done in AOO if you go View > Toolbars ..., and select Picture. Read Chapters 4, 5 and 6 in the Impress Manual.
As a new poster you will find much useful information in the Impress Manual. May I suggest you bookmark the pages.
Press F1 to access the Help screen and search for your problem
When a pop-up window opens, click the Help button for extensive help on that function - it is often more comprehensive than the manual.
