When I import an MS Powerpoint presentation that uses a dark background, the text defaults to black in Impress, but white in PPT.
The text is often unreadable as a result.

Why do you put the [Solved] tag in your title? It is used to tag threads that don't need support anymore because it has been fixed. Is it a question or just a link to the fix?
Select the text and set the font color to Automatic in the Fonts Effect tab. The import filter may add the black color as a direct formatting.
