Impress crashing on Mac after slideshow

Whenever I use the slideshow my Impress on my Mac crashes. It is a default it will. I did not have this problem with the earlier Oracle version of OO. I recently "upgraded" to the latest version but I had lots of headaches with this. More than anything, when I try to navigate, I may hit that little gray button that starts the slideshow. If I did not save my work, the file crashes and I have to recover to the latest save. Is there a way to stop this crushing, or if not, is there a way I can get rid of these three little functions that inadvertently show up a second after I hover over the slide I want to bring to the forefront? I don't care about those three functions being there really. I can right click to create a duplicate slide anyway, and the other two are just nuisance.
