Can't read a slide in a MS PowerPoint file

Post by MikeCPA »

Received an MS Powerpoint file

OO versons 3 and 4 do not read one slide, containing an X-Y style graph.
The graph content and XY axis are all blank.

But...
My Smartphone app, WPS Office, reads the file OK.
My tablet app, Polaris Office, reads the file OK.

I'm clueless....and ideas?

Download and use the (free) PowerPoint Impress Viewer from MS site.
 Edit: Corrected error in name.

Or you can try the LibreOffice. It have more compatibility with the foreign (MS) filetypes.
You can install near the OpenOffice, not needed uninstall it.

Can you upload an example .ppt (pptx?, .pps?) file here?

The pptx file is 585kb and this website reports that 128kb is the maximum allowed file size. Can I remit the file another way?

It's slide 14 that Impress is not reading. When I read it on my smartphone in WPS Office, slide 14 shows the left/vertical axis data from $0 to $70,000,000 in $10 million increments, and just dots on the lower/horizontal axis, with two data lines plotted, one light and one dark blue. It looks like a spreadsheet.

Is this a known problem?

Thanks

The zip file is still 457kb

I thought the whole point of OO was compatibility with MS Office.
Is there a list of incompatibilities to review in advance?

You can upload it to a file share service, and then link it here.

I thought the whole point of OO was compatibility with MS Office.
There is NOT 100% compatibility between the different office file formats. Never was, and - maybe - never will, because the "Transitional" version of the MS OOXML Standard file format (.pptx) is always changed, the description is always modified. When the MS will fully support the "Strict" version of OOXML Standard (the Standard was made by MS!), then the compatibility will be closer to the 100 %. The old, outdated binary formats (.ppt) of the MS Impress never was Standardized, and they was published (partially) in the last time only. The import filters (converter routines was developed by reverse engineering method
The Apache OpenOffice and LibreOffice are NOT MSO clones.

Use and force the unified International Standard ODF (Open Document Format) file formats instead of the OOXML and binary formats.

Is there a list of incompatibilities to review in advance?
I think: there is not.

Please try this Box link, to the pptx file:
https://app.box.com/s/37lgn12eyekqkn5dxf551dttbqxcbpws

When I followed this link to test it....I just noticed that I can read the years on the horizontal bottom axis of slide 14 now, in the box link. but could not in the aforementioned smartphone and tablet apps.

I confirm that slide 14 does not read correctly on OO 4.1.2 on Xubuntu. The pasted image that is the chart does not display content. The slide background and text display correctly.

I have attempted to Copy the chart from the presentation and Paste it into an external image editor (Gimp); Gimp reports that there is no content on the clipboard.

Thanks to everyone, especially for the tip on LibreOffice 4.4.6.

Is LibreOffice related to OO, and a clone to MSO?

I actually use 2 office programs, an old Corel Office 2000 suite (v9) which I still like very much, and Open Office, for it's MSO compatibility.

After years I'm considering upgrading to the new Corel Office X7 which they claim can read and write all the latest MSO file types.

Yes, the LO was forked from OpenOffice - but the AOO nor LO is NOT a MS Office clone.

(And always use the International Standard ODF file formats.)

If you like it, and your research suggests that it does what they claim, then go for it.
