Hi. I was working on a presentation with lots of images for the past 2 weeks. It was 21Mb in size. Today when I opened it, it showed me a dialog box saying "ASCII Filter Options", and when i click ok, it opens in openoffice writer with # signs. Yes, this is a 3 year old issue on these forums, I have seen some of the older posts.
1- renaming it to .zip and extracting, not worked. Says the zip is invalid
2- looking in the backup folder, not there.
3- i closed it safely the last time i worked on it, didn't turn off unexpectedly.

i'm on windows 7.

Your file is most probably damaged beyond repair. Use your last backup (if you have one).

Thanks for the reply. No, I don't have any backup :(

How did it happen, and why?

Sadly, quite nothing to do, see: 22 pages term paper replaced with pound signs.
Any power shortage for example? It's a common root cause of such problem.

Check the temporary folder of the system (see in OOo Tools>Options>OOo>Paths). If there are folders like sgmlf.tmp with a file having the same name inside, make a copy of that file, rename it in .odp and cross your fingers.

I think there are less reports about such problems, upgrading to AOO 3.4.1 may help.

Sometimes over-speedy computer shutdown can cause such a problem.

There is nothing which is guaranteed to work. You could try searching for, downloading and using an Undelete utility, but I doubt you will recover your file.
