Poor image quality when printing "notes" from Impress

Post by ecompas »

Forum,

When printing notes pages from Impress in Ubuntu/Linux (don't have the same problem in Windows), the image quality is extremely poor for large images (such as a full screen capture). It appears to have been resampled to a thumbnail size, and the result is almost unusable as a presentation notes page. I don't encounter the problem when printing just the slides, and it doesn't seem to depend on the printer driver (same result if printing to CUPS PDF file as to my HP laser printer).

Anyone encountered and solved this problem? Or a workaround?

Thanks,

Eric

What is your printer resolution set for?

Look under File > Printer Settings > Properties > Device > Resolution

Thanks for replying!

It's set to 1200x600 dpi. The text and some images appear fine. I've attached a screen capture of a PDF page produced from Impress showing the poor image quality. I also encounter the same problem when printing the handout.

Again, this occurs using OO in Ubuntu (7.10) and not in Windows.

Thanks,

Eric

Sorry, what's the problem there? I can clearly see that that's a BBC news page ;-) ;-)

Wow. That's really bad.

Could you attach a small sample presentation here?

Hmm,
I just tried printing the notes of one of my presentations to pdf with the current oo-dev(m4) and 2.3.1 under Ubuntu 7.10. The resolution of Notes and Viewgraphs turned out fine in my case. (The only annoyance was that they were printed out in "landscape" orientation despite my setting of "portrait".

same in my case with OO2.3.0 from the ubuntu repository.
(resolution had been set to 300 dpi in all cases.)

Hmmm...in producing a test file, I've found the source of my problem. I'm working on multiple platforms, and the printing error only occurs when I've created the file in Windows and tried to print it within Ubuntu. Versions I'm using:

Ubuntu: OO 2.3.0
Windows: OO 2.3.1

Looking through the *.odp files, I noticed that within content.xml in Windows I find office:version="1.1" and office:version="1.0" within Ubuntu. Could this difference be the source of the printing error? Are 2.3.x versions not compatible across platforms?

I'll know now to stick to one platform, but I thought this was the flexibility I was gaining in switch in to OO.

Cheers,

Eric

P.S. I couldn't create a test file small enough to post within the forum's file size limit.

I doubt that the version difference is the source of the problem.

It would be very helpful to have a look at an actual file. You can use one of the free file sharing sites: mytempdir.com, filecrunch.com and mediafire.com are three that are commonly used.
