Unable to get videos to play correctly with multiple screens

Post by dragonslumber »

Hey everyone.

I'm trying to embed a video on my presentation which I'm doing on a platform with three monitors. The embed technically works well, I can get some videos to play with sound, but they display on the wrong screen (off kilter on the "next frame" screen), and the main screen displaying the presentation has a black rectangle where the video should be. I've tried downloading new codecs, changing videos, changing the monitor where everything is displayed, nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

I appreciate the help in advance.

I've tried wmv, avi and mp4, from different videos made at different times, and I also tried on 2 separate computers (though both running Windows 10).

Format of the presentation file was what was requested - is it .odp or .ppt?

I tried with both, although it was natively created with Impress. Either way, if I create a new document, add a page then add the video to that second page, go back to the first and play the Slide Show, I get the same issue.

Can you pull the wandering video back to the desired window? If so, it will probably stay there.

I couldn't move or affect the video. This is how it displays on my two screens, where it displays and where it should appear. Also doesn't matter if I try to switch screens or anything of the sort.

Your picture returns a 403 error

If you click on the link and refresh when it gives the 403, it should reload correctly. The trick can work well in some instances with Google images as well.

Very sorry, I completely missed it the first time around. Here it is:

A workaround, which may not suit you to use:

I run my computers on Xubuntu and always found difficulty (read: impossible) to get video to play on a slide using the Impress insert video method. My workaround is to place on a slide a hyperlink to the video, or sometimes a command line to the system video player, incorporating any necessary parameters for full screen and termination of the video player. This is admittedly clunky, but my video clips will usually be several minutes long and the clunkiness passes unnoticed/uncommented by a friendly audience.

@dragonslumber: if you use a single screen output, does the video show correctly positioned on the slide?

I got it to run on my laptop with a single screen (also Windows 10), but really if I can't get it to work on multiple screens there's unfortunately no point for me. I ended up coding my own thing in Unity instead which only took about an hour. Thanks for the attempt at the assist though, this wasn't the first time I had these issues with Impress and since I do a lot of presentations, online and off, I need to make sure I have the right degree of flexibility.

Reproduced, this issue comes from presenter-console extension.
This OXT has been embedded in AOO since a couple of versions.
