I recently upgraded my MacOS to Catalina and OpenOffice has started crashing every time I try to open an Impress presentation.
It shows the current page of the presentation briefly, then hard crashes.
This happens even if I create a new presentation with an existing standard template... as soon as it tries to open the actual presentation, it shows the first page for a second, then hard crashes.
Version numbers listed in signature below.

I tried resetting the user profile by exiting OpenOffice and renaming the user folder to user.old
But this test file you posted still crashes OpenOffice immediately, although when I open Writer or Calc files, there isn't a problem.

Start with safe mode on your Mac

If it works in Safe Mode identify the program interfering with it.
If it does not work in Safe Mode then stop AOO, uninstall AOO completely, reset the user profile again, download AOO from http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html and re-install.

It turns out the issue disappeared after a reboot of my Mac. Thanks for everyone's help to resolve it!
