[Solved and Issue] Add Word Count to the Status Bar

Post by grouchcouch »

I see where to get word count (Tools -> Word Count), but is it possible to add this to the Status Bar. I hunted around, and see lots of ways to configure the menu and tool bar, but nothing on the status bar (at the bottom of the writer window).

Thanks for the response. Hmm, just a preference, but I hate those floating windows. They always seem to be in my way.

Most of the status bar is useless stuff. This should really be configurable.

I guess I'll limp along with occasion word count checks.

If you type a standard page (your usual layout of font, spacing etc), you can get a fair idea of wordcount from the number of pages.

The information on the Status bar is most useful. It tells Page Style, typing language, page number and total number of pages, whether you are in Insert or Overwrite mode, if the altered file has been saved (that's what the * is for) and also accommodates the zoom slider and icons. I wouldn't be without it.
Edit: If you must have a word count in Status Bar, I think LibreOffice has one.

[Solved] Add Word Count to the Status Bar

Post by RoryOF »

A recent extension, still in development but stable, to insert a running wordcount into the Status Bar, is at
http://extensions.services.openoffice.o ... controller

Please choose the correct version for your operating system. If you are not sure about this, don't do it!

Some reports indicate that on first startup after installing this extension, OpenOffice will hang. If so, force it to close (use TaskManager in Windows). Subsequent startups are as normal.

If you select text, the count for the selection, whether single or multiple selection, is shown in addition to total word count. The utility did not appear to affect speed of file opening (tried on 100,000 word file).

Note that, when the WordCount extension is installed and active (i.e. not disabled) I find on Linux 64 Ctrl A (Select All) in Writer is extremely slow - 12 mins to select all of a plain text 125Kword file, whereas without WordCount extension it is instantaneous.
Edit: 2016 July 21: The problem of slow reaction I noted above is cured in more recent versions of Xubuntu (16.04) It may have been related to graphics display drivers.
