Using 'find' crashes Calc

Post by Rhyssa6 »

I've been using open office calc for many years with no problems, up to and including yesterday.
This morning I turned the computer on and every time I try to search using the 'find' searchbox calc crashes. It immediately goes through the reloading process and restarts but as soon as I search again, it crashes again.

I tried several different files, some that I use every day and some that I haven't opened in a few weeks. I tried creating a new file. Every one of them now crashes when I use 'find'.

I'm using Windows 11 home version 21H2. I downloaded and installed the latest version of open office (4.1.13) Previously I was using 4.1.07.
I tried renaming my user profile and creating a new one (saw this in a post from a few years ago). I haven't installed anything new.

I can search using the binoculars icon but this is inconvenient as I use 'find' dozens of times a day to search records.

Please, does anyone have a fix for this issue?

Very strange, not heard of that recently.
You can try LibreOffice, it is very similar to AOO. There are portable versions to make sure that it works better before deciding to switch to it.

This was reported a while back, and while some uers were able to replicate it, some were not.
One common work around was to use Ctrl+f rather than the search box.

I tried copying some files to my other laptop which was running a much older version of OO (installed 2016). The search function doesn't work on it either, including on much older files that were already on that laptop.
I then uninstalled Apache OO and installed Libre Office on the old laptop. I can't even attempt to search in it as the 'find' icon is greyed out.
I then tried using find in a text document on my current laptop and it works in that.

'Find and replace' works in both Libre and Apache but I'm unable to use 'find' in any calc file using either Libre or Apache. It's like there's a hidden attribute "search" and it's been turned off on all my calc files.
I've added a sample file if anyone wants to try it.
Does anyone know of a different program I could try?

I've now installed OnlyOffice and I can search spreadsheets using it. If I close the sheet and open it in Calc though it still doesn't work.

The search feature works also fine for me with LO 7.2.6.2 (portable) on Windows 10.

I thought that OnlyOffice would do the job. You can remove the tag in your first post and set the icon to None.

If even resetting the profile doesn't work, I have no idea then.

OnlyOffice is a temporary work-around until I find a fix for the problem. I still use calc for everything else and just use OnlyOffice when I need to do some searching.

Today I tried uninstalling Open Office (including user files and registry entries) and reinstalling, still no luck.

Reinstalling won't change anything since all the user related configuration is in the user profile.
But if you've already reset it, then that's weird.
You can try the dev mailing list, maybe they heard about that.

But if it occurs also in LibreOffice, then it's even weirder...
