What does Read Error mean
I have been inserting jpg images into an Open Office document and they are there for a while and then the images disappear and i see a sign saying read error What do I do ?

There is a bug in AOO which causes images to be lost like that.
See 16. Lost images ... and a word of caution about using AutoRecovery. LibreOffice 6.1 and later is now probably better than AOO in [Tutorial] Some useful hints on using images for a full explanation.
The bug is (almost completely) fixed in LibreOffice so consider migrating to LO.
