Can't remove 4.1.11 and istall 4.1.13
Can't remove 4.1.11 and istall 4.1.13
I am presently using Open Office 4.1.11. It is working fine and doing everything I want it to, However, Kaspersky tells me I need to upgrade to 4.1.11 and I find I can upgrade to 4.1.13. Kaspersky will do an automatic upgrade but says it fails so I try to do it myself. Since I know that I already have 4.1.11 I decide to just uninstall it so I go to the Add/Remove Program and select Open Office 4.1.11, click uninstall and then get a message that it can only remove programs that are installed. Can somebody show me a path that will uninstall the prigram and get me back so the OS recognizes the program is installed and operates correctly.

You should be able to download the installation package from here and install it without uninstalling the previous version.

Re: Can't remove 4.1.11 and istall 4.1.13
Already tried that. Installation went fine but 4.1.13 is nowhere to be found and if I try to do it again it says a later version of 4.1.13 is installed and I will have to remove it before this can happen. The system does not even see it as being installed.

What have you tried that leads to the conclusion that "The system does not even see it as being installed"?
If you click on the Windows button and scroll down through the available programs, is there no entry for OpenOffice?
Do you see a folder at C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenOffice 4? What is in that folder?

Re: Can't remove 4.1.11 and istall 4.1.13
I see Open Office 4.1.5 and Open Office 4.1.11. In this case 4.1.5 is not usable but 4.1.11 works fine, however when I go to Add/Remove 4.1.6 does not appear but 4.1.11 does but when I try to remove it the system tells me that it can't remove a product that isn't there

Try a cleaning application like CCleaner to remove any remnants of former installations.

This is not a remnant, it is an operating program that the system can't see

Re: Can't remove 4.1.11 and istall 4.1.13
And?
The point is: the operating system has lost trace of something, thus clean it, to either remove the program that is still remaining or remove the entry that makes the OS believe that the program is still there. In both cases, something that should have been removed has been left somewhere.

Please provide the exact message instead of descriptions of the message. Also include any error number in the message.

Re: Can't remove 4.1.11 and istall 4.1.13
There is no error number because it doesn't think there is an error. but the comment is"This action is only valid for products that are currently installed". However. Open Office is installed and is working just fine. I just can't uninstall it and the product list also thinks I have Open Office 4.1.5 but I don't see that anywhere else. I don't ask easy questions and this is the only time since I started with windows NT that I have been totally without any idea of where to go next.

But again, have you tried a cleaning application like CCleaner?
Last post for me in this topic since no action from OP here.

Is there anybody out there that has any ORIGINAL ideas on this?

I doubt that the fix will be "original". There's still something wrong in the Windows Registry.

Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenOffice4\program and create a starter link for soffice.exe (Drag&Drop to the desktop). This starts the welcome screen for all components Writer, Calc, Impress etc.
Drag swriter.exe, scalc.exe etc. as needed. Then attach the desktop links to the start menu or to the task bar.
P.S. On MS Windows the installation may fail if the old office is still running. Close the "quick-starter" on the task bar near the system clock. Better: Kill the soffice process in the task manager (right-click Start button > Task Manager)
