Can't install Java

Post by Soshonika »

New to Open Office. Installed it yesterday, as need to create a database. Created database. Tried to edit database. Error message:
OpenOffice requires a Java runtime environment (JRE) to perform this task. Please install a JRS and restart OpenOffice.
Install Java. Restart laptop. Try again. Error message again. Circle, repeat.

I did have problems installing Java initially, but don't know whether that might be of baring.

Help?

Troubleshooting Open/LibreOffice and Java Note especially the requirement for a 32 bit version of Java for Windows when using OpenOffice.

Thank you for your reply Robleyd. Does it matter that my laptop is 64bit?

Thank you Villeroy, I think that's the same source I downloaded it from yesterday. I've re-downloaded, and installed, etc. Still not working.

No. The software bitness is what is important - AOO for Windows is a 32 bit application and needs a 32 bit Java.

That might be 64-bit software unless you run a 32-bit Windows. Anyway, it plays well with any Java software that is installed by default.
OpenOffice for Windows is always 32-bit software, even when you install it on 64-bit Windows. OpenOffice interoperates with a 32-bit Java which is not the one you get when you click the download button on java.com.
On a 64-bit Windows 64-bit programs are installed in C:\Program Files\. 32-bit software is in C:\Program Files(x86).
On a 32-bit Windows there is no such difference. Everything is in C:\Program Files\. 64-bit applications can't be installed anyway.
