[Solved] Cross references in LO Writer
[Solved] Cross references in LO Writer
Can anyone help me with this:
I use cross-references - e.g.: "an example of this can be found on page 99". From my point of view, it would be very useful (and also obvious/logical) to have the name of the reference (target) in question (set on p. 99) displayed, e.g. by right-clicking on the page number displayed; the same also when right-clicking on the reference itself (on p. 99)*. I have not discovered anything similar so far.
So my question: Is there a way to get this info displayed?
* PS: Here it would also be great to see on which pages the reference is used!

Re: Cross references in LO Writer
As no one's replied perhaps a simple example document might help people understand exactly what you're asking.
Windows 10, Openoffice 4.1.11, LibreOffice 7.4.0.3 (x64)
Re: Cross references in LO Writer
You don't have to right-click on the reference. Just move your mouse over it and the name of the bookmark will pop up. To show the bookmark, you need the Navigator (F5). You could submit an enhancement request for LibreOffice to add display of a bookmark name when you right-click on the bookmark area. You would have to insert the bookmark with a word or longer bit of text selected to make that work, though.
OpenOffice 4.1.11 on Ubuntu; LibreOffice 6.4 on Linux Mint, LibreOffice 7.6.2.1 on Ubuntu

Re: Cross references in LO Writer
Thank yo, JeJe and Boris!
Here is a demo doc added.
No, I see no popup info when I move the mouse over the reference (in the demo doc: "6" on page 1; here the mouse cursor only changes to a hand) or over the reference target (the word "shows" on page 6, where the target with name "shows" is set). (I am using LibreOffice.)

Re: Cross references in LO Writer
Edited my first post. Both display fine in LO 7.5.3.2, Snap on Ubuntu. Maybe it's time for you to get a more recent version of LO.

Re: Cross references in LO Writer
Using OpenOffice the cursor turns into a hand (pointing finger) when I move it to the "6", Then hovering cursor over it, "shows" pops up
Apache OpenOffice 4.1.15 on Xubuntu 22.04.4 LTS
Re: Cross references in LO Writer
I do support the update suggestion as the proper way to fix your issue. Portable versions are available here.
As a quick workaround you could also toggle "view field names" (keyboard shortcut Ctrl+F9). The cross reference name seems to be taken as the field name for cross references.
Note that this toggles display for all fields, so it may look messy if you have a lot of fields on the page. Mess should be cleaned up again when you toggle back to field content.

Re: Cross references in LO Writer
This is what it looks like for me (and I think the others here) with the mouse cursor over the "6"
If that satisfies your requirement - then its just a question of understanding/fixing why the tip doesn't show for you?Windows 10, Openoffice 4.1.11, LibreOffice 7.4.0.3 (x64)
Re: Cross references in LO Writer
I think he needs to turn on /Tools /Options /OpenOffice : General and check "Tips" under Help on that Page. Checking "Extended tips" may also be helpful for other matters, but not, I think, for this problem.

Re: Cross references in LO Writer
In LO 7.5.3.2, Tips is always turned on, it's not even on the Options dialog anymore. You don't need the extended tips for this.

Re: Cross references in LO Writer
@floris v: the OP lists LibreOffice 5.3.2.2 Portable, (Forum signature) which may differ from LO 7.5.3.2. Worth his checking in any case.
Apache OpenOffice 4.1.15 on Xubuntu 22.04.4 LTS
Re: Cross references in LO Writer
- File CrossReference Demo.odt provided by the OP contains information LibreOffice/7.4.5.1$Windows_x86
- As regards LibreOffice 5.3.2.2 Portable: under Options ⟶ LibreOffice ⟶ General there is only the "Extended tips" checkbox
- Perhaps the problem is related to settings in the Expert Configuration?
(e.g. in org.openoffice.Office.Writer/Content).
OpenOffice 1.1.5 – 4.1.15
LibreOffice 3.3.0.4 – 7.6.6
Windows 7,10,11 64-bit

Re: Cross references in LO Writer
I am using LO Portable 7.4.5.1.
Extended tips is on.
Ctrl+F9 works.
No pop up at all when mouse cursor over page number (or hovering).

Re: Cross references in LO Writer
What about other fields eg a cross reference to a heading, do you get the tip then?
There's a suggestion for changing an entry in the Expert Configuration here but my testing shows no difference - the tip over "6" always shows for me whether its set to true or false

Would you be able to try the non-portable version of LO?

Worth trying a new LO User Profile.

Non-portable version? No, I am restricted to the portable version.
In Expert Configuration ExtendedTip is true.

I cannot confirm it.JeJe wrote: ↑Tue Jun 06, 2023 1:43 pm (...)

The value of the Tip property in org.openoffice.Office.Common/Help determines the visibility of the tip in both portable version 7.4.5.1 and in several non-portable versions I tested.
The same applies to the ShowContentTips property in org.openoffice.Office.Writer/Content/Display
(cf. the .gif file I attached to my previous post).

Re: Cross references in LO Writer
@cwolan - oops, insufficient testing on my part. If I set to false and restart LO it no longer shows the tip, restart needed.

Re: Cross references in LO Writer
@cwolan:
ShowContentTips property in org.openoffice.Office.Writer/Content/Display (in Expert Configuration) was set to false!
Changing it to true seems to solve my problem!
I will check this more closely and then confirm my success message.
Thank you very much!
UPDATE: YES, this setting works!
