[Workaround] Powerpoint and sound

Post by gismeu61 »

Hello,

I created a power point presentation and I would like to add a little bit of sound.

How would I do that?

I found one tutorial at Youtube, but that did not work.

Would appreciate any help or online tutorials about that.

Many thanks, Richard

What did not work? The sound adding procedure? The playing of the presentation? The Sound at playing?

What file type are you using? .ppt, .odp? - Always use the native file formats: .odp for the Impress presentations.

Can you link the Youtube video here?

Hello Zizi64,

thanks for getting back to me!

Here is the link to the YouTube video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcVDNBPDnyA&t=70s

The sound file is a WAV File

If I go according to the instructions of the YouTube video, then at one point, having selected the sound file for addition, I click on 'open' and what happens is that the text on the slide vanishes and the logo or pic of the sound file replaces the text.

I didn't try yesterday, but tried today and I can actually here the sound (it is the ringing of a bell for about 5 seconds) which is actually good - that is what I want, except that I need the text on the slide and not the logo/pic of the sound file.

If anybody has any ideas, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks, Richard

short update,

when I add sound, then the text disappears. If I then add text again, the sound disappears.

Very enigmatic,

Only PPT format can embed a sound.

Hello Bidouille,

I apologize for my mistake which only shows how little I understand about these things.

So the file extension is correct, not sure what you would call that though.

Thanks, gismeu

Impress: the presentation maker application of the AOO/LO.
The files with .odp filename extension are named as "Impress documents" or "Impress presentations" or "Open/LibreOffice presentations"...

PowerPoint editor: the presentation maker software of the MS Office suite.
"PowerPoint files": MS presentation files with .ppt, .pptx filename extension.

Bidouille' answer:

It is possible to add sound to your slides: you can link them to an ODF (.odp) document. Yes, this way causes some problems with the portability. You need use the Relative URL-s option, and same directory/file structure on the sourece and the target place, and you must send/transfer the .odp document and the linked media files too.

(I never tried it.)

Hi,
there are some (weak, compared to Powerpoint) options to insert sound to your Impress presentation...
  • Slide transition: You may choose one of the in-built sounds or Other Sound
In-built sounds are collected in the gallery. Other Sound can be linked anywhere on your computer.
  • You may insert movie/sound by menu Insert | Movie and Sound - I don't recommend this... (internal player often does not check some codecs... - strange image represents media file in your presentation)
  • Interaction (sound can be started by click on object)
  • You may create a link to a sound/media file - an external player can play your sound (recommended: VLC player). Player starts in a new window. Slide transitions don't cause any affects on player. My recommended procedure.
Note: Sound and other media files only can be linked and not be embedded. (Powerpoint can do.)

Hopefully this behaviour will be improved some day on LibreOffice (same problems, IMHO).

Godspeed

I just tried it: it is possible to embed .wav files into the LibreOffice .odp files:
There is a sample wav file embedded in my attached .odp file (the wav is downloaded from this site):
https://www2.cs.uic.edu/~i101/SoundFiles/
  • Tested in my LibreOffice 6.1.6
  • Use Insert – Audio or video – Browse – Open
  • You can resize the icon of the embedded media file. Then it will not cover the text.
  • The icon will be invisible when you Play the presentation.
My sample file:
wav_embedded_into_odp.odp

:bravo:
Checked this on LO 7.3.6.2 - good news!
The sound started by slide transition. I did not find any option to control start/end/repetition - did you?

Did not in my environment. At first the icon did not show in edit mode (only little black dot). While playing the icon displayed.
Thanks a lot for your sample file!

Yes, I have not noticed the small (automatically reduced) icon at playing. When I resized it again (enlargened) then it appeared at the playing in the modified size.

Impress can do too with a .wav file. Just save as PPT format.

You can embed wav files into .odp file too. At least with the LibreOffice. See it above.
