Thunderbird docx eMail attachment doesn't open
Thunderbird docx eMail attachment doesn't open
In Mozilla Thunderbird (up-to-date), when a docx file is attached to eMail it won't open automatically when "clicked" as the attachment. If the attached docx file is saved to desktop and asked to open while in OpenOffice it works. My options are set to use OpenOffice for this document type. I am running the current and updated Windows 10 with a current and up-to-date OpenOffice. What have I got set wrong?

Re: Open docx eMail attached
Always download the attachment first, and then open it.
And use the LibreOffice. The LO has a higher compatibility level with the foreign file formats.

In Thunderbird you should find in (menu) Tools → Settings → General → Files & Attachments some settings that inform Thunderbird what to do on opening specified file types. However, there is no option available for docx files. Maybe someone here will know how to add that but if not I would recommend posting and asking at Mozillazine Forums

Edit: The solution in this post isn't much good. Read my subsequent entry below for a much easier way. |

Re: Open docx eMail attached
I worked it out now. To set your Thunderbird do the following.
- In Thunderbird click to view your email that has an attachment.
- At the bottom right-hand side of the message pane you will see a 'download' icon with the associated text "Save"
- Next to the word "Save" you will see a drop-down arrow — click on that arrow and select "Open".
- In the dialogue that opens up select "Open with" and from the drop-down selection pick the program that you want to open the file-type with. (You might have to specify "Other..." to pick the program you need to open the file.)
- If you always want to use that program for this file-type then tick the option "Do this automatically for files like this from now on."

Re: Open docx eMail attached
Thanks for the advice. I have checked and there is indeed an option of what to do with docx files. It's a default setting T-Bird to use OpenOffice for docx files. Still, it doesn't work. I will post this while exchange on Mozilla and see what they can add. Thank you.LastUnicorn wrote: ↑Mon Oct 03, 2022 6:27 pm In Thunderbird you should find in (menu) Tools → Settings → General → Files & Attachments some settings that inform Thunderbird what to do on opening specified file types. That option and procedure works fine. It's only when remaining IN Thunderbird that it does not open and rad the docx.LastUnicorn wrote: ↑Mon Oct 03, 2022 7:39 pm I worked it out now. To set your Thunderbird do the following.

Re: Open docx eMail attached
Have you tried the TB forum? It is quite weird. Works fine for me on xubuntu.
It should work.
What happens when you try to launch the file?

Re: Thunderbird docx eMail attachment doesn't open
I sent myself an email with test.docx attached.
I opened the email in Thunderbird 102.3.1 under W10. I double clicked the test.docx attachment. AOO 4.1.11 started and the docx file opened as test-1.docx in Read Only mode as is to be expected.
. .
In TB Tools > Settings > General > Files and attachments ..., has Microsoft Word Document: Use OpenOffice Writer set. I expect installing AOO set it.

Re: Thunderbird docx eMail attachment doesn't open
I to have the same software (64 bit TB) but the files do not open. It just gives me a blank screen that I eventually esc out of. Like I said, if I save the file to my desktop, it will open just fine in OO. But if TB gets in the middle ... nothing.

Try the TB forum. Or check the TB advanced settings and make sure the link to the AOO executable is correct for this kind of extension.
