[Solved] White marks on grey background

Post by Griffith »

Hello. I write in dark-grey letters on a light-grey background. When I changed the font name, I got white "square brackets" marks throughout the text, starting from the book name. So, the question is how to remove those unwanted marks. Please find the attached snapshot. Thank you.

I assume it's caused by some setting in the document which is not revealed by a "snapshot". Upload a sample document so the settings can be checked.

To upload a sample document to the forum do the following:
  1. Look at the text-box (aka message-box) into which you would normally enter your 'reply' text.
  2. Below the text-box you will see a button titled Full Editor & Preview. Click on that button.
  3. A new text-box will appear with a lot of useful buttons on top for replies. There is a button there for adding a URL to your reply, should you need to do so. Hover over the buttons to see what functionality they provide.
  4. Look below that text-box and you will see two tabs: Options and Attachments. Click on the Attachments tab.
  5. Now you can add your attachment to your reply. Maximum file size 128 KiB per attachment.
  6. If your attachment is too large then use a file sharing site like MediaFire or similar. Upload your file to the sharing site then make a link in your reply to the file on the sharing site.
P.S. Do not include sensitive or highly personal information in your attachment.

The sample document does not look anything like the "snapshot". The font is different. There is no light gray background. The text is not dark gray. There is no square bracket. Please upload a sample document that does have the problem.

Far as it's recorded,
The background of the page – Document background – light gray 1.
The exterior background – Application background – dark gray 1.
The text boundaries – light gray 2.
But that's not a point.
Could you please tell me how to copy a page where those white marks are?

Make a copy of your file and delete everything after what you showed in your screenshot (and perhaps before if needed). If smaller than 128kBi, upload it here. Or on a 3rd party file sharing site.

Use your operating system file manager to make a copy of the document, then open the copy with LO and delete everything except the page with the problem.

I just realized that these are program settings, not document settings. With these appearance settings, field indicators are the same color as the square bracket. The display of square brackets to indicate bookmarks is a new feature in LO 7.3. If these are bookmarks, uncheck View > Field shadings if you don't want to see them.

Edit: After testing in LO 7.2.5 it is apparent that square brackets were used in earlier versions of LO to indicate bookmarks but they were the color of formatting marks instead of field shadings and their display was toggled by View > Formatting Marks instead of View > Field Shadings. This suggests to me that the appearance of the square brackets may have been caused by an upgrade to LO 7.3 instead of a change in font name.

Hi,
(1) Thanks for reminding me about how to copy.
(2) The "uncheck View > Field shadings" works fine. Thank you so much.
LO 7.3 got to me together with upgrading my OS to Ubuntu 22.04.
