[Solved+Issue] Bring back the Classic icon theme in LibO 3.4

Post by Tommy »

I'm really disappointed that the LibreOffice devs removed the Classic GUI theme from LibO 3.4.

now only Tango, Crystal, Oxygen and Hi-Contrast are available and I like none of them.

I opened this bug report in LibreOffice bug tracker:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38175

if you liked the Classic theme, please give support to it

No, there is no voting system on Bugzilla.

It's free software: submit a patch. Or, better, re-package the old theme as an extension.

Personally, I applaud the LibO folks for removing some of the bloat in the OOo packaging. Does it make sense to include a half-dozen icon themes in every package when most users will only use the default? Make it optional--if you want it, download it and install it.

@hagar: Bugzilla supports voting, but I can't find any mention of it in the FDO site, even when I log in. Maybe they have disabled it?

If developers ignore the number of votes anyway, then what point is there in giving users the illusion that by voting they can make an impact?
OOo 3.3.0, Windows 7 64-bit SP1, planning to add LibreOffice after a bug-fix version of 3.4 is released.

@acknak

I have no technical skills to do that.

the icon debloat thing LibO folks did was wise about removing duplicate icons... 100% agree with that.
but I totaly disagree removing a whole theme... OOo/LibO had 5 themes (Classic, Tango, Oxygen, Crystal, Hi Contrast)
and there's no real advantage removing one of them.... the only effect is pissing off people that loved that theme...

since voting is not yet possible, I encourage users of this forum to drop a comment on the issue page ( https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38175 ) asking to bring back the Classic GUI theme in LibreOffice 3.4.1

The problem is that it was the default theme that has been removed. It may irritate many users. And personally, it is the theme I like the most.

It may have been a purposeful move. It means LibO can never look like the majority of OOo installations.

Perhaps they want the visual difference to give a sense of separation between the two suites?

OIC. Yes, that's a bit harder to understand.

I didn't notice since the default theme for Linux (apparently) has not changed.

Are you sure that votes are ignored? Maybe they are simply one factor out of many that have to be considered, and even a million votes might not be sufficient to outweigh some other factor.

As a counter example, the multipage view in Writer was also turned down for a long time, but the votes made it clear that the feature was popular and useful, and eventually it was implemented.

Here's how I see it: voting is never guaranteed to have an effect, but not voting is guaranteed to have no effect.

Under Linux, the default icon theme is selected according to the desktop used:
kde3 → Crystal
kde4 → Oxygen
gnome → Galaxy
other desktops → Classic

I agree fully. We have all seen how the "votes" on issues has worked in OOo. Something else to work on.

Sorry but I don't want to engage in LibO for the moment. Just do it...

When LibO was first released as a portable app at portableapps.com, there was some comment about the size of the package (http://portableapps.com/node/27628 and elsewhere in that forum). There was some discussion on which files could be termed unnecessary and be removed without breaking LibO. With a subsequent release, the portableapps.com team provided a conservative means to reduce the number of files (post-install). If one wants, even more files can be removed.

(There were also counter-arguments to the effect that size, RAM, etc are irrelevant since modern machines can handle most anything thrown at them.)

Back on topic, I won't support the request to reinstate the theme right away.

If it mattered to me, I'd just drop in a set of icons that suited my requirements - it would take about 20 minutes, I reckon. I prefer to spend time using the applications rather than redecorating them.

issued is solved

there's a workaround!!! :super:

just copy the images_classic.zip from LibO 3.3.2 ( ....\Bin\LibreOffice 3\Basis\share\config )
and paste it into LibO 3.4

then go to Tools / Option / View / Size and Style of Icon (I'm translating in english the menu items from the italian version) and select the newly added Classic theme that will be again available. :super:

Nice!

When I suggested the extension route, I was thinking it might as easy as copying the proper zip file, but I wasn't sure.

Thanks for posting the instructions.

Theoretically, yes... but just try to open that zip file and look at the file names and folders: building an icon theme for OOo/LibO is a daunting prospective...

yes, I know... there are hundreds of icons... create a new time would be very time consuming...

however, I'm happy with the Classic theme, so I don't need anything else.
