Re: [Solved] Read-error. Format error discovered...

A good starting point for learning how to format in OpenOffice is
Writer for students (several languages)

Much better than most video tutorials.

On the "Full Editor" screen (button at bottom of Quick Reply screen) or the "Post Reply" screen, below the Submit button, you will see a tab "Attachments". Click on that and you will be able to upload your damaged file.

Or in Writer, make a Table of Contents from the header of each recipe, and use that for quick access to the recipe.

Re: Read-error. Format error discovered . . .

Please upload your damaged file either to the Forum or to a file sharing site (please post the URL), so that it can be examined and hopefully repaired.

Note: such error usually occurs when a Writer file has been edited also in MS Word and a comment extended over a text range deleted.

Re: Slide show Writer

Make a PDF from the recipe file, then show it one page at a time in a PDF Reader. Or write (or Cut and Paste) your recipes into Impress. Or put your recipes in a database, and display them using a suitable form.

Three are ways of doing this - no need to author a new way.

Re: ods file error

John_Ha analysed this problem; from memory, his finding was that OpenOffice does not issue a "do not shut down just yet" warning to the operating system, which would prevent it shutting down until all was OK. But it must be said, the needed delay is minuscule - a matter of seconds; the pro...

Re: ods file error

OpenOffice files are complex, being composed of a number of items. They take some time to build, and if the computer is powered off too quickly such as by shutting a laptop lid, or crashes, there may not be sufficient time for the computer to build the output file or for it to be flushed from the so...

I agree with floris v: the file is badly corrupted. Best to use a utility such as Recuva or PhotoRec to see if a hidden temporary file can be recovered. Do this as soon as possible.

Re: Format error in sub-document context.xml

Once or twice on Forum we have come across content.xml being merely style definitions. I think it is probably caused by over-hasty close down of the computer, before the file has been fully generated and written to disk. An outside chance: there might be a deleted work file on the disk drive. Worth ...

It can also happen that a document is not in OpenOffice's native format, hence must be translated to that on opening. Some translation, which occur in the background on opening, can be fast, but the process of editing can increase the size/complexity of a document so that on a new opening of it, for...

Your file is most probably damaged by possibly an error in transmission to/from the OneDrive. If you have a local hard disk copy, try that instead of he OneDrive version.

An un- and re-install of OpenOffice does not remove the OpenOffice User Profile, which is where a spellcheck problem resides. It is necessary, as the links from LastUnicorn tell, to remove or rename the OpenOffice User Profile, and an un-/re-install of OpenOffice is then rarely necessary. Once the O...

@floris v: thank you for the reminder in the above post that the keys are Shift Enter, not Ctrl Enter. I have corrected my posts accordingly.

Let my error be a warning to others against doing too many things simultaneously!

In computing a k is taken to be 1024 characters (think of powers of 2).

It might help to adjust your screen resolution when editing to (say) 1280 x 1024. I sometimes have to do this when using a 12" screen (1920 x 1080) laptop.

My preference is make or edit presentations etc on my desktop with multiple screens.

I must investigate Hagar;s 2x suggestion.
