This is really basic, but I just downloaded Open Office, opened Writer and tried to change my default font. Help specified to go to Tools, Options, etc. Only problem is that no submenu for Options appears under the Tools menu. Any ideas as to what went wrong. Using a Mac with OSX 10.4.11
Thanks

Welcome to this forum bannister!
Once you click on Tools > Options..., you should get a new window with a left pane showing all the possible groups of options, and the right pane showing the detailed options. Do you get this window? It may be "below" the main one, or in case you use several screens, on a different screen that you have not turned on.

Re: No option tab in Tools menu
The problem is there is no Options in the Tools menu. It's just not there. Which is the source of the whole problem. The Options option just isn't there.

You say in your profile that you are using OOo 1.x, is this correct?

Hi,
I also have the same problem on my Mac with Leopard and 3.1 OO version.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

On the Mac go to OpenOffice.org (just to the left of File) > Preferences. Then in the resulting window, on the left, click the drop down arrow next to Writer, and choose "Basic Fonts". Then on the right you can change each Default, Heading, List, Caption, and Index. Then click "OK". Now when you open a new file it should have those fonts.

Yeah, for some reason "Options" moved to the OpenOffice.org button and is now called "Preferences." I cannot fathom why they'd bother with the change, but there it is.

Most word processors on the Mac have the default settings under Preferences (Mellel, Nisus Writer Pro, Ragtime), so it makes sense to do it to be more consistent with the Mac-user interface.

I don't know if somebody said this already, but if you haven't done this yet, try it out. If you are using a mac and don't have that basic options tab in the Tools menu, Choose OpenOffice --->Preferences --->OpenOffice -->then Appearance . It should then have an option to change the document background color. I have mine as teal... or technically "Cryan 2". It will set whatever color you chose as your default. It won't print out that way or anything. if that's what you're looking for I'd recommend colored paper, but this worked great for me. It fills in the borders and everything.
