[Solved] Page numbers increasing by twos

Post by thirteen_engines »

Yet another problem popped up yesterday. I've been moving chapters around in my book and noticed yesterday that the page numbering is increasing by twos. In other words, 1, 3, 5, 7 .... which wasn't the case a week ago. I'm sure that I've done nothing to explicitly change anything to do with page numbering or formatting in general ... just editing the content of the book. At this point it isn't a critical problem but any ideas about how to fix this would be much appreciated as it will eventually have to be fixed.

When you look at the print preview, does it show blank pages?
It may be your page style that is set to Right only.

Print preview shows no blank pages that I can see (although there *are* ~600 pages in the document). I checked the page styles on a few pages and they are alternating between left and right. The first page of each chapter always starts on a right page.

Is there a number on _each_ page? or merely a number on every second page? In this latter case, perhaps the Header or Footer has become turned off in the Page Style in use, which possibly should be set to "Same content left/right" for the Header/Footer which contains the page number. /View /Fieldnames and /View /Field shadings are useful toggle commands to let one see how a value is generated from field data.

There is a page number on each page. I did notice yesterday when previewing that I can only go about half way through the text and no further but the slider on the right keeps going and counting off pages ... by twos.

Can you make an extract of the file that still shows the problem and upload it here (see How to attach a document here)?

Here's an extract from the first chapter. It shows the page numbers increasing by two's.

Blank pages being inserted. Click on the rightmost of the three page display icons at bottom right of screen to see this. Haven't worked out yet just why - time for afternoon coffee.

This is exactly what happened!
Check the Print preview, you'll see the blank pages:
Print preview.png
Then go to a left page, double-click the page style name in the status bar and in the Page tab, change the Page layout to Only Left instead of Only Right.

NB: you don't need to alternate Left & Right styles. Better use Mirrored and/or uncheck the Same content left/right option of a single page style.

Hagar has given a solution. I would normally use a Right page style to start a chapter, set to right page only, and automatically followed by Default page style, set to mirrored for the text of the chapter. At Chapter end I would /Insert /Break : Page Break, using Right Page ready for the next chapter (actually I do this via the Heading 1 style, which is only used for Chapter and number line).

Ah yes, I should have been more precise: Right page are good for first page of a new chapter indeed.

Thanks guys. That did the trick. :bravo: I still don't know why things suddenly changed (or exactly when as I wasn't keeping track of page numbers). One thing I might mention is that when looking at the print preview for the full document there were no blank pages shown as they were for the extracted sub-document. I would probably have said something about it in my earlier post if I had seen it. :)
