Mail Merge from Google Contacts?

Post by kikl »

High, I would like to mail merge information from google contacts into the OpenOffice Word Processor. Can it be done and if so how? :?:

I understand that I basically have to create an openoffice database and sync it with google contacts. Well, I hope someone can help.

Base is a bridge between databases and the OOo office suite. I don't see a way to link Base to the Google Mail database though. I'm pretty sure Google don't allow 'public' access to that!

Here's a way to do what you need though:
In Google Mail, Export all of your contatcs to Outlook CSV format. This will create a .csv file on your desktop.
Open that .csv file in Calc. Save that as a Calc spreadsheet.
Then follow the instructions in the following article to link Base to the spreadsheet, allowing you to mail merge from the spreadsheet of contacts just as if it were a database.

If this has answered your question please go to your first post and use the Edit button, and add [Solved] to the start of the title. You can use the green tick icon at the same time if you like.

Well, thanks for your reply. It answers my question, but unfortunately not the way I had wished to, because I don't want to take care of two address databases, one for google and one for open office.

Just one question/idea. I have synced google contacts with my evolution mail program. The google address book is copied locally for offline operation. So there exists an evolution database with my google contacts. Shouldn't it be possible to use this information into the openoffice database?

Accessing Google contacts is definitely possible. There are two thunderbird extensions that make it possible to sync your Google address book (Google Contacts) with your thunderbird addressbook. If they can do it, certainly there's a way for OpenOffice to do the same. I'd love to see this done. It would make mail merging almost reach the point Outlook is at. You'd just use your Google account instead of an exchange address book.
